Today is the final day of New York Fashion Week. I have kept my eyes closely on as many shows as possible. We all know there are sooooo many collections being shown and how difficult it is to see all of them. I am still pretty devastated that I missed my first NYFW in 7 seasons. My favorite time of year has begun- AWARD SEASON!!!!!! The red carpet, the fashion, the speeches I love everything about it. I asked on Twitter and Facebook what you wanted for “Make It Work” Monday. I got a mixed bag- half wanted a “how to” tutorials while the other half wanted my regular Red Carpet Breakdown. So I did a little of both! LET’S BEGIN!

Trend: Smokey Eyes

Who rocked it: Julianne Hough +Katharine McPhee + Jennifer Lopez

Love this look? So easy to recreate! Use an eye primer then apply a gold base. Blend in a taupe/light brown on the lid and underneath the eye. Black liner on top with false lashes. Bring in a hint of brown pencil liner 3/4 of the way on the bottom of the lash line. Voila! Instant Smokey Eyes! Also check out this guest blog on how to achieve a smokey eye!

Trend: Deep V

Who rocked it: Claire Danes + Katharine McPhee +Amy Poulher + Jessica Chastain + Eva Longoria

I think a Deep V looks flattering on everyone. It elongates your neck, slims your waist and always looks fashion forward. You should definitely try this trend for your next big event.

Trend: Old Hollywood Glam Hair

Who rocked it: Naomi Watts + Rachel Weiss + Kelly Osbourne + Jessica Alba

Want to do this look? First you need a curling iron. After you curl the first section of hair pin it so it will cool and set. All of the curls MUST go in the same direction. Spray with hairspray. After 30 mins, take down the pinned curls and brush with a paddle brush. Smooth with a comb and spray with finishing spray.

Trend: Bumped Ponytial

Who rocked it: Zooey Deschanel +Kristen Bell

Ponytails can look so fresh on a red carpet. For this exact you need a teasing comb. First section the top layer of hair and pin to be out-of-the-way. Tease the crown of the head. Next take down the pinned section and brush the top layer of hair so it looks effortless. Put in ponytail and spray. Here are 12 ponytails you can try yourself.

Trend: Colored Eyeshadow

Loftiss Says “Red Carpet Breakdown- Carrie Underwood Hosting the CMAs”

If you missed the CMAs last night, no worries! For the third year in a row Blake and Miranda won it all. Honestly it doesn’t bother me- they are just the cutest together! Carrie and Brad hosted for the 3rd year and were adorable as always. Most importantly Carrie changed looks 12 times. 12! I LOVE IT! I can’t wait to host an awards show and have a new look from top to bottom every 3.5 minutes! Since I am the biggest country fan I had to do a post on Carrie and her always right on point looks. I appreciate Carrie because not all the country stars have the best style. But our girl has come a long way from being on Idol to being an Idol.

1. This Ines Di Santo looked haunting. Incredible. That slit up the leg almost stopped the show!

3. This was the least favorite of all the dresses Carrie. Even though I’m a huge Christian Siriano fan I would have liked this dress to have had more color. I would have really enjoyed seeing her in a yellow or hot pink gown.

4. Again the “Blown Away” dress. Just being fierce. I mean rhinestone gloves!

She walked out and you could almost hear the audience gasp. She was giving us abs, and legs. Seriously, this Sally La Pointe dress was beyond flawless!

And of course must show you the cover of Carrie’s new single “Blown Away.” Carrie really does know how to carry off grey which is such a hard color.

Question! How do you wear colored jeans?!?!

I am the biggest fan of colored jeans mostly because I try not to wear a lot of black. Now that bright jeans are an option (you can buy them everywhere from Old Navy to Bloomies) my Fall and Winter will be so much happier! You can wear this trend year round but in the winter you can pile on the goodies! I love colored skinny jeans paired with a loose shirt, blazer and a scarf. There are a million ways to make this look chic and not like you are heading to high school calculus. Make sure your accessories are mature ie chains, hammered metals, studs. You don’t need a statement necklace with these….these ARE the statement!

Miss Loftiss! What are the rules for pairing prints with prints?

Now this is a difficult trend to do. It is really trial and error. If you stand back from the mirror and don’t know what to look at… you probably went too far. It should have a focus. Very streamline. Example: no poka dots and stripes. But you can totally do vertical striped pants with horizontal blazer. *Hint- Take a pix of your self and ponder “If I saw someone walking down the street in this- would I think WERK or WEIRD!?”

Pairing black and brown shoes or vice versa. It was a no no for so long and now it seems accepted?

I came from the school that you NEVER wear these colors together. THEY ARE ENEMIES! I love that this has loosened up and it’s totally cool to pair together. Remember one must be the primary and the other must be the hint. You can’t have both. Always decide what the focus is and then add the opposite for a bit of flair. I think it’s worn best together for a casual look.

Hey Emily! I have a fashion question. Will you do a blog about essential pieces for a wardrobe? Like transitional, wear numerous times in different ways, types of clothing items and accessories. Because I feel like if I go to an event like a wedding or show and wear something and take pictures in it, I can’t ever wear it again because people will think I don’t have an expansive wardrobe or just rely on certain dresses, etc. Thanks!!

Girl this is the story of my life! I am always going to events and need a new look but can’t always buy new clothes. Here is what I do. You can totally repeat outfits. The magic behind it is switching up all the variables. Example: you have a navy blue shift dress.

For occasion #1. Wear with an multi-colored statement necklace, tan pumps, hair in a french twist and orange lipstick.

For occasion #2. Same navy dress paired with a lime green belt, brown boots, long gold necklaces, and hair wavy and down. See?

*Great things to have in your closet: A silk button down, 2 or 3 statement necklaces, a go to blazer, jeggings that you can dress up or down, bright-colored/patterned scarves, something leather (skirt, pants, jacket). It’s all about wearability. What you can wear numerous times and hopefully for many seasons.

I’m in love with the color yellow but not sure if I can pull it off. HELP!!!!

Well you are right on trend with the ladies at the Emmys!!!! I LOVE YELLOW! It’s so whimsical and fresh. Again adding pops of yellow is way easier than pulling off an entire yellow gown. Remember this color is a lot so take that into consideration with the rest of your outfit. If you want the focal point to be the yellow moments, then tone down everything else. I really like the color brown as an accent and wool as a texture to try.

I’ve been meaning to ask…what is the appropriate skirt length for a female- early 30′s?

Here’s the breakdown:

Micro:

Can be done but ONLY if everything else is very covered up.

Knee Length:

Perfect for work and play. Very chic. Beautiful on all shapes. I love the pencil skirt!

Midi:

Also known as “Tea Length.” A hard length to try. Must be fitted or you look like you walked out of “Little House on the Prairie.” Also adorable for an evening event.

Maxi:

Love! So in! So flattering. Must have!

Others will disagree with me BUT the straps to this dress need to be taken up 2 inches on each side. Her breasts would be lifted and not saggy then. I live for Sofia and I really like this dress but a few stiches would have made this dress a home run!

Hayden Panettiere- Marchesa

This WAYYYYY to much dress for her tiny little shape. All I look at is bright blue chiffon and not at her pretty face. This dress would work on Iman or a Victoria Secret Model who is 5’11.

Come on! How can you hate them? They are adorable. I appreciate they always dress nicely and for each occasion. Nothing makes me more angry than when celebs bums around in jeans for an event. They all have their own personal style.

LOOK AT MY BESTIE KELT!!!!! She was interviewing on the red carpet for The Insider. I LOVEEEE her custom-made dress by Watters Designs. Instead of going hipster she went glam and flirty. Add the Bridget Bardot hair for the final touch. I think she looks like Rock n Roll Barbie!

BEAUTY

I’m soooo over these hair extensions on everyone in Hollywood. IT DOESN’T LOOK REAL. YOU AREN’T FOOLING ANYONE! This doesn’t look polished. She should have gotten someone from my L’Oreal glam squad to have mad her hair just perfect. Also her makeup is looking a little blah to me. I’d love to add some shimmer on her cheekbones and a pop of blush on her cheeks.

I had to look up this chick because I didn’t recognize her. But wow look at this hair! I DIE!!!! Love the color, the updo, the effortless tendrils. yesssssss

PINK VS MILEY

I know you were waiting for it. I’m sorry but Pink totally rocked this hair best. Pink is just a badass so it works. Miley to me seems like she is really forcing the envelope lately. Just be 19 and happy. Stop trying to grow up so fast and keep reminding us you aren’t Hannah Montana. We get it.

Hair- Hate it

Her hair looks thin and like she should be in a version of “Little House of the Prairie.” I would have loved a 1950′s Old Hollywood wave, or a slick back ponytail.ps- does Diane look alarmingly thin. Or is it just the dress. Her waist looks like its 14 inches!!!!!!!

Look #2- Giambattista

Bravo Glam squad!!!!!! This look is beautiful. I really like her smoky eyes in the nutmeg/rose color.

Love this modern up do. Totally easy to duplicate. But why did she keep that loop in the top of her ear??? WHY!!!! Everything else was perfection.

Naomi Watts- Gucci

Yikes. You look a little like you have gone to the same doctor Nicole Kidman went to. Skin is too tight. Hair also looks messy and unkept. And for the dress, she could have totally rocked this 1920′s Flapper style dress if we shortened 5/6 inches. It would be precious as a micro mini.

Salema Hayek- Gucci

WHAT IS HAPPENING!!!! You used to be a style icon. This dress would be lovely on an actress pushing her 80s! You are too hot for this! DO BETTER!!!!!

Jessica Chastian- Armani

Thank you Jessica! This looks is Hollywood Startlette at it’s best. I love every single thing about this look. Simply stunning.

Beyond breathtaking.I want to die in this dress.

Nothing is better than effortless beauty. J’adore the light grey/purple eyeshadow and the thrown up hair. We all know this hair took a long time to manipulate but it’s like anything…don’t let us see you sweat!

ohhhhh I like this dress. Really interesting. I would have been mesmerized by the dress if Natasha had worn her hair up. There is sooo much volume at the shoulders it could have have been shown off better. I don’t even mind the sheer sleeves or seeing the bra. Pretty mint color for Spring!

Nelly Furtado- Alberata Ferretti

This is like a DIY project on bad. Very very bad.

Taylor Swift- Elie Saab

Very unexpected for Taylor. I really like this dress on her! More edgy. It almost looks like a McQueen to me. Good for you Taylor from stepping out of your comfort zone.SEXY!!!!!

Katy Perry-Blumarine

Ooookkkkkkkkkk…..I hate this completely. This dress looks completely cheap like a bad Prom dress.

Why does Katy Perry think her hair should always color coordinate with her clothes….uggggg so trashy. And this dark lipstick makes your look like a vampire not like a star. Next Look!

Julianne Hough- Kaufman Franco

This totally looks like she stepped out of a bathtub and put on a rhinestone towel/dress. If you know anything about Broadway Musicals, I literally wore this exact outfit in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” in the bedroom scene. Regardless-it’s working for me! The styling of her hair/makeup is perfectly on point!

I like the thought of this look, but it’s too casual for a huge movie premiere ESPECIALLY in NYC. The fit of the pant isn’t perfect. With a little alterations this look would be perfect for work to drinks.
